Get Ready for the 2011
Monterey County Bike Week

To celebrate the National Bike Month, Monterey County Bike Week will take place on May 9-15, with FREE breakfast sites across the County on Bike-to-Work/School Day on Thursday, May 12. Other events, including bike vs. car challenge, local bicycle rides such as the bike to city council events and bicycling workshops, are also featured that week. These events promote bicycling as an economical, environmentally friendly and healthy transportation alternative. Nearly 4,000 bicyclists participated in the weeklong series of event last year.

For more information on how you can participate and register to win a laptop and other prizes, please view the Bike Week Schedule page or contact Kaki Cheung, Transportation Planner, at (831) 775-4413. Give your pocketbook a break, put some fun in the old commute, and help us save the planet.

Second Annual Golden Helmet Award Nominations Requested

Local Bicyclist to be Acknowledged for Dedication to Bicycling to Work as Part of Bike Week Event
SALINAS, CA – The Transportation Agency for Monterey County is soliciting nominations from Monterey County employers for the second annual Golden Helmet Award, as part of the 2011 Monterey County Bike Week, occurring May 9–15, 2011.
The Golden Helmet Award will recognize a Monterey County resident for his/her dedication to bicycling to and from work. The aim of this award is to highlight the benefits of bicycle commuting and inspire others to utilize alternative transportation modes.
Nomination forms are available at www.bike2work.com or the Golden Helmet Award page and are due to the Transportation Agency by April 1, 2011. The winner will be recognized on April 27, 2011 at the Transportation Agency for Monterey County’s Board of Directors meeting and will be awarded a gift certificate to a local bike shop of their choice.
The 2010 Golden Helmet Award winner was Mr. Frank Henderson, a Tutorial Services Coordinator at Hartnell Community College. He commutes 100 miles a week between Salinas and Monterey for his job and volunteer position at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
For more information or to request a nomination form, please contact Kaki Cheung at (831) 775-4413 or kaki@tamcmonterey.org.
