The Transportation Agency for Monterey County understands that communities that support walking, bicycling, and riding the bus require less money to be spent on widening roads and building parking lots. To encourage these types of projects, the Transportation Agency adopted a Transportation for Livable Communities Grant program. Through this grant program, the Transportation Agency has awarded the Cities of Salinas, Marina and Monterey and the County of Monterey a total of $1 million in recognition of six mixed-use housing projects that will encourage bicycling, walking, and riding the bus.

This program was modeled after the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC). Award funds are granted on the merit of the housing or mixed-use project submitted in this application. The cities and county may use these funds for any transportation improvement project within its jurisdictions. More money may become available in the future for this program.
