Weekend Traffic Control Planned at Rio Road and Highway 1

As part of construction for the Highway 1 Climbing Lane Project, there will be traffic control with flaggers as needed on Saturday, April 21 and Sunday, April 22, between the hours of 2 p.m. and 6 p.m., approximately. The additional traffic control will be provided to help reduce congestion during the peak weekend travel times. The goal is to help traffic move efficiently through the intersection of Rio Rd and Highway 1. Drivers will be able to access both directions of Highway 1 and Rio Road.

A previously planned closure of the southbound Highway 1 left turn lane to Rio Road has been canceled.

Drivers wishing to avoid the intersection may detour to Carmel Valley Road and Carmel Rancho Boulevard. All business and shopping centers remain open during construction.

The Monterey County, Resource Management Agency (RMA) is managing the construction of the State Route 1 Climbing Lane Project in cooperation with Caltrans and is making needed adjustments as it monitors traffic impacts from the project.
