TAMC Awarded $10 Million for Salinas Rail Extension Project from SB 1 Gas Tax Revenues

Salinas, CA (April 26, 2018) — The Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC) announced that the California State Transportation Agency has awarded $10 million to the agency to extend passenger rail service in Monterey County. The award grant is from the Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program (TIRCP). That grant is funded through SB 1, the statewide gas tax, and proceeds from the Cap and Trade program, and will be applied to TAMC’s Salinas Rail Kick Start Project.

“We are excited,” said Debbie Hale, the executive director of TAMC. “It’s gratifying to know that our efforts to bring more rail service to Monterey County are recognized and this new funding source puts us one step closer to making it happen.”

The Salinas Rail Kick Start Project is the first phase of TAMC’s Salinas Rail Extension Project.  The Kick Start project will extend two round trip passenger trains from Gilroy to Salinas, which would include track improvements, positive train control and a layover facility. It is anticipated that this new service connecting Monterey County to the Silicon Valley would attract at least 95,000 new riders in the first year.  As demands warrants, service could be expanded to up to six round trip trips per day.

Salinas Councilmember, Kimbley Craig, said, “This is really good news! Anyone who travels or wants to travel between Salinas and the Bay Area will have more options. It offers more access and an alternative way to get to jobs, health care appointments, a ball game or just a day of fun in the Bay Area.”

The Transportation Agency was one of 28 recipients to receive more than $2.6 billion in TIRCP grants for transformative transit and rail projects. According to a news release from the California State Transportation Agency, “The projects selected for this round of Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program grants make great strides in helping California transform the state transportation system.”
