“TRANSPORTATION AGENCIES HOST PUBLIC MEETING FOR SCENIC HIGHWAY 68 IMPROVEMENT PROJECT”
MONTEREY COUNTY – The Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC), in partnership with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), will host a public meeting to discuss the scoping of the Environmental Impact Report for the Scenic Highway 68 Corridor Safety Improvement Project.
The meeting will be held on Thursday, October 3, 2019, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., in the Monterey-Salinas Transit Meeting Room, 19 Upper Ragsdale, Suite 100, Monterey. Community members will have the opportunity to meet with TAMC and CALTRANS representatives to offer input on the scope of the Environmental Impact Report for the project.
The goal the Highway 68 project is to improve safety, access and operations, while reducing congestion and greenhouse gas emissions along the scenic Highway 68 corridor. The recommended concept for safety improvements includes converting most of the signalized intersections to roundabouts; and enhancing wildlife connectivity in order to reduce travel delays and collisions between wildlife and vehicles.
Highway 68 is a heavily congested corridor used by more than 25,000 vehicles each day as commuters travel between Salinas and the Monterey Peninsula. The highway also aids freight and agricultural transport between the City of Salinas and River Road, as well as transport of goods and visitors to the Monterey Peninsula.
With $50 million from Measure X, the Scenic Highway 68 Corridor Safety Improvement Project is an excellent candidate for additional federal infrastructure funding, as well as state funding from SB 1 programs.
