MONTEREY COUNTY – The Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC), in partnership with  Sol Treasures is pleased to announce the winners of the King City Sidewalk Art Competition.

In Spring 2026, the Transportation Agency released a call for art geared toward local Elementary School, Middle School, High School/College, Adult Amateur Artist (18+), and Professional Artists. A community steering committee created community ballots with the artwork that best met the criteria in the call for art, and then the greater community had a chance to vote on their favorite artwork. 

Seven professional sidewalk art murals of the extra-large sizes of 6’x14’ or 6’x30’ are being installed on the sidewalks marking safe routes to Santa Lucia Elementary and Del Rey Elementary, as well as youth destinations such as the King City Recreation Department, San Antonio Skate Park, and the King City Library. All seven professional art submissions will be installed by mid-October. Smaller artwork from the remaining artist categories will be installed along the safe routes to Santa Lucia and Del Rey Elementary Schools in Spring 2027.

After the installation of the seven extra-large sidewalk art murals is completed, TAMC and its partners will host a community art walk on the evening of October 15 starting outside at the King City Recreation Department. The community is encouraged to attend the art walk to celebrate the work of the artists and all involved.

TAMC will reach out to artists and teachers of student artists to coordinate on receiving their prize. Artwork not selected for installation will be displayed on the Monterey County Safe Routes to School program website at https://saferoutesmonterey.org/ and shared with Sol Treasures and other community partners to display on their respective social media channels and websites.

PROJECT PARTNERS

The King City Safe Routes to School Sidewalk Art project is part of the San Antonio Path & Safe Routes to School project, an effort by the City of King, Transportation Agency for Monterey County, Ecology Action, Monterey County Health department, Sol Treasures and other community partners to create safe, healthy, and engaging spaces in King City. The goal is to transform public streets into healthy spaces for kids, teachers, and community members to walk, roll, and move about in their neighborhoods.

The Project is funded through an Active Transportation Program grant from the California Department of Transportation and local Measure X transportation sales tax funds.

PROJECT INFORMATION

The King City Safe Routes to School Sidewalk Art project is a community-led effort designed to make art more accessible to people who live and stroll to school in King City. The Call for Art was developed by a steering committee made up of community members and advocates and prepared to be as inclusive as possible. The winning artwork was selected by community members through completion of paper and online ballots.

PRIZES

There are five (5) categories to compete in based on age and experience. Prizes include $25 cash cards plus art supplies for elementary school students, $50 cash cards for middle schools students, $100 cash cards for high school/college students, $150 cash card for adult amateur artists 18+, $200 cash cards for small professional artists with small-sized art pieces and seven (7) $4,9000 check awards for professional artists with extra-large art pieces (6’x14’ or 6’x30’).
