Today, the handcar is viewed as a novelty, but in the 1880s to the 1900s it was the utility truck that helped maintain more than a hundred thousand miles of railroad track. “California Live’s” Ross Thomas learns how to drive a handcar at Handcar Tours (just north of Monterey) using his hands and legs to propel forward.
